Is anyone out there bothered by the fact that Edith Wallace is planning on running for council again? Has everyone forgotten how she and Mr. Nicholson walked out of a called executive session, forcing a lack of quorum which prohibited a vote on the Island Farm rezoning, perhaps resulting in the law suit brought by Voice of Strasburg? Has anyone forgotten that Citizens for Strasburg got more than enough signatures to remove her from office, which they chose not to do after being assured that she would not seek office again? Is it true that most of the council signed her petition to run? Can it be that the majority of the town council of Strasburg condones her actions? Doesn’t anyone care that she publically said she’d do it again?

As a citizen who campaigned and voted for Mr. Le Vine, Mrs. Mauck, Mr. Terndrup, and Mr. Whittle, I am deeply disappointed that they would so turn up their noses at the citizens and support another run by Mrs. Wallace, most of whom said in private that what she did was wrong, but I guess now that they have their own agendas to get through, their personal convictions just go out the window.

Well, Mrs. Wallace I guess the council agrees that you can feel free to walk out anytime you choose…in fact I guess that goes for anyone on council, because nobody cares!

As a very fiscally conservative person, I believe strongly in not spending more than you have; but, I also believe in keeping your word when you promise or pledge monies to someone or some organization. Case in point is the Town Council’s discussion on Tuesday, January 8th about whether or not to release promised funds to the fire and rescue squad.

I don’t know the ins and outs of the whole discussion, but I do know that when an amount of money is promised and added into someone’s budget, they need it. Instead of worrying about where the funds will be spent AFTER the pledge is made it would serve this council better to find out all necessary information before making a promise. The fire house is depending on these funds and I for one believe fire and rescue trumps a “jobs study” in importance, but I’m sure council will release the funds for that.

Like the Congress of the United States, our council seems to be interested in giving away more money than it brings in. And like the Congress instead of holding themselves to a standard they will just choose to raise taxes and raise taxes and raise taxes (or should we say “fees”) and take little bits from here and there to fill in the gaps. The funds for the water and sewer plant should go only for that! Granted the state has MANDATED that we update our water plant, but that is a pretty important thing to do, and I for one don’t want that fund “dipped into” to pay for non-essential things.

If we have necessities to pay for, to bring us up-to-date in our town office and fire house and standard safety issues, perhaps dipping into the Reserve Funds is in order. Savings are for important needs and we have savings to use for emergencies. However, if these things are not emergencies and not important enough to take from the reserve fund, then put them off until the money is there.

I hope the town council, in the future, will look into the feasability of paying out pleges before making the promise; because, like a person is only as good as their word, so a town is only as good as their word.
